It’s not always easy to get out to eat, and these days, many of us actually enjoy making dinner right at home. This is my favorite appetizer to get at Longhorn’s, and this yummy copycat recipe is perfect for those who want to flex their kitchen skills and fry up some deliciously spicy shrimp that tastes even better than Longhorn’s (in our opinion, anyway).

  • Light Brown Sugar
  • Cayenne Pepper
  • Chili Powder

  • Buttermilk

Substitutions & Variations

  • We use large shrimp in this recipe, but you could make it with medium shrimp, also.
  • Garlic powder can replace the garlic paste in this recipe. To do this, you’ll need 3/4 teaspoons of garlic powder.
  • Self-Rising Flour contains baking soda, which yields a lighter and crispier breading on the shrimp once fried. If needed, you can make a homemade substitution by adding 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon of salt to 1 cup of all-purpose flour. Then just use that whole mixture in this recipe.

How To Make Wild West Shrimp

  1. Add oil to a heavy-bottomed frying pan or Dutch oven and heat the oil.
  2. Combine ground mustard, black pepper, brown sugar, and cayenne pepper in a bowl and set it aside.
  3. Combine buttermilk, lemon juice, and garlic paste in a bowl. Add the remaining seasonings from step 2 and the flour to a large Ziploc bag.
  4. Dredge the shrimp in the buttermilk mixture and then add it to the Ziplock bag to coat.
  5. Transfer the shrimp to the hot oil and fry them on both sides.
  6. Remove the fried shrimp and transfer them to a paper towel lined plate to drain.
  7. Drain the oil from the pan and return it to the stove over medium heat. Melt the butter in the pan and then add the garlic paste and sliced cherries to sauté.
  8. Add the reserved seasoning and the fried shrimp and toss to coat.
  9. Serve with ranch dressing for dipping, enjoy!
