Dessert Bars Worth Indulging In

These Hello Dolly Bars are also commonly called 7 Layer Bars or Magic Bars! No matter what you call them, they’re perfect little squares of rich, chocolatey, coconut goodness that everyone loves!

These bars take about 30 minutes to make start to finish, but then will need about 2 hours to cool. So they’re perfect for making ahead for a potluck!

This vintage dessert recipe is really easy to make and also really sweet, so be prepared for a sugar rush!

Why are these called Hello Dolly Bars?

They’re also commonly called 7 layers bars! These became super popular in the 1960s at the same time as the Broadway musical “Hello, Dolly!”.

Made these today – so easy! Very rich but perfect for taking to my group meeting! Thanks

Ingredients For Hello Dolly Bars

The bottom layer of crust for these bars is made out of graham cracker crumbs, melted butter, and salt.

Layers of goodness then fill the baking dish using sweetened condensed milk, semi-sweet chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, chopped pecans, and sweetened shredded coconut.

You can easily make this recipe the way you love them by swapping ingredients around! Exchange butterscotch chips or semi-sweet chocolate chips for white chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, milk chocolate chips, or dark chocolate chips!

Don’t like pecans? Easily substitute them for and chopped nuts like almonds, mixed nuts, or chopped walnuts! All of the different ways to make these bars exactly how you like them leave no excuse to not make a batch!

How To Make Hello Dolly Bars

Prepare by preheating the oven and lining a baking pan with parchment paper. Then it’s time to start layering!

  1. Mix together the graham cracker crumbs, melted butter, and salt then add the mixture to the prepared pan.
  2. Press the crumbs down evenly to cover the bottom of the pan.
  3. Pour the sweetened condensed milk over the top of the graham cracker crust.
  4. Sprinkle half of the chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, and pecans over the sweetened condensed milk. Add coconut by sprinkling it over the chips then top with the remaining chips and nuts and gently press down. Bake until the top turns golden brown with the center still wiggling. Cool completely on a wire rack before serving!

Steps

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line an 8x8-inch baking pan with parchment paper and set aside.

  2. Add the crumbs, melted butter, and salt to a small bowl and mix until thoroughly combined. Add the crumbs to the prepared pan and use the bottom of a flat glass or your hands to press the crumbs down evenly to cover the bottom.

  3. Pour the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the graham cracker crust.

  4. Sprinkle half of the chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, and pecans on top of the sweetened condensed milk.

  5. Sprinkle the coconut over the chips then top with the remaining chips and nuts and gently press down.

  6. Bake for 25 minutes, the top should be a golden brown and the center will still wiggle. Allow to cool completely on a wire rack before slicing and enjoying.

Notes

  • Traditionally these are made with the coconut completely over the rest of the ingredients, but I think that this method makes them look more appetizing and prevents the coconut from getting too toasted.
  • I recommend using a pan with straight sides for best results.
  • These are also called 7 layer bars.
  • I add additional salt to the crust because the rest of the bars are really sweet and I think the butter and salt in the crust balance it out some.
  • To make a 9x13-inch pan: Double everything except for the sweetened condensed milk and bake for 30 to 35 minutes.
