A Refreshing Large Batch Cocktail

This Blueberry Sangria is bursting with the best seasonal blueberry flavor from the mixed-in blueberries to the Homemade Blueberry Simple Syrup that gets added in! This refreshing cocktail will be a go-to all summer long that everyone will happily sip on!

Here in Maine once the blueberries are ripe for picking we fill up pints to the point of overflowing and pull out all of our favorite blueberry recipes as soon as we get home from the fields! From making Blueberry Muffins to Blueberry Buckle, and Best Ever Blueberry Cheesecake Bars, we don’t let any blueberry go uneaten!

Those fresh Maine blueberries are exactly why this delicious drink has a permanent spot on my summer cocktail list! I enjoy it best when I make the base of this drink up in the morning to allow the flavors to meld together before enjoying it later that night!

Being a huge fan of blueberries, this sangria is absolutely delicious! I doubled the batch, so I used a bottle of sweet red wine and a bottle of Shiraz so it wasn’t too sweet. I will definitely make this again!

Ingredients For Blueberry Sangria

This Blueberry Sangria Recipe has an such effortless prep! To mix up a batch you’ll need:

  • Blueberries – I prefer to use fresh blueberries but you can also grab a bag of frozen blueberries!
  • Cara Cara Orange – Sliced up to place into the sangria and to garnish across the drink before serving!
  • Red Wine Blend – This recipe will use a full bottle of wine. Grab your favorite red wine blend!
  • Blueberry Simple Syrup – An easy addition that brings a touch of sweetened blueberry juice! Easily made with fresh seasonal fruit (or frozen!), sugar, and water.
  • Chambord – A raspberry liqueur that adds fruity sweetness to this sangria!
  • Soda – Lemon-lime or club soda gives this fizzy blueberry drink its carbonation. You can use a lemon-lime soda such as Sierra Mist, Sprite, or 7UP for a sweeter drink.
  • Ice – For serving!

Two of the most important steps to ensure this sangria is packed with flavor is to first let the sangria sit for a few hours so the flavors can meld perfectly together! With the second being to add ice only when serving so it doesn’t water the drink down.

How To Make Blueberry Sangria

  1. Place the blueberries and orange slices into a large pitcher.
  2. Pour in the red wine, blueberry syrup, and Chambord. Stir to combine.
  3. Chill in the refrigerator.
  4. Add in the soda just before serving.

How To Store Leftover Blueberry Sangria

You can store it for up to 2 days but keep in mind it will lose its carbonation. I recommend just making up a fresh batch when you want to enjoy a glass!

What Is Sangria?

It’s a punch that originated in Spain that was first served in the US at the 1964 World Fair in New York. A basic sangria places fresh fruits or your favorite fruits in a pitcher and combines them with wine.

Oftentimes a sangria recipe includes additional liqueurs or fresh squeezed fruit juice.

  • White Wine Sangria – Juicy strawberries, oranges, and peaches combine with simple syrup and more!
  • Rosé Berry Sangria – Rose wine, Chambord, blackberry brandy, lemon-line soda, and fresh berries collide for a delicious batch cocktail!

Steps

  1. Add the blueberries and orange slices to a large pitcher.

  2. Pour in the red wine, blueberry syrup, and Chambord and chill in the refrigerator for 8 hours for best taste.

  3. Remove from the fridge and add in the soda just before serving, then pour into glasses with ice to serve.

Notes

  • It's best to let the sangria sit for several hours so the flavors can meld.
  • You don't want to add the soda initially because it will lose its carbonation.
  • Ice will water down the drink and this is why it is only added once ready to serve.
  • You can use a lemon-lime soda such as Sierra Mist, Sprite, or 7UP for a sweeter drink or stick with club soda. Sparkling water can also be used.
